Merremia umbellata

Merremia umbellata, a photo by Gerris2 on Flickr.

I obtained the seed which gave rise to this plant from a vendor in Reunion Islands. Where he got it I haven't a clue. Merremia umbellata typically flowers during temperate zone winter months so I will have to enjoy (with luck) its bright yellow flowers indoors next year.

I have this little plant growing on my windowsill in my office cubicle at work. Fortunately I have been told it will not grow large so I think I can keep it here to keep me company.

Via Flickr:
This variety of Japanese morning glory forms a petite plant with fabulously variegated leaves. It has small pink flowers and would be a good candidate for a hanging basket arrangement due to its seemingly lack of a ”need” to wind up a vertical support.

In this view, you can see how the flower makes a reverse tube. From my observations of this asagao mutation, the tube folds backwards on itself, making an outer wall and the illusion that the center area has popped out.
