Ipomoea nil Fujie's Star Burst

Revel in the large yellow leaves of this Japanese morning glory - it appears the curled edge trait has not been expressed in more recent leaves. I can't wait to see the flowers, which should be red and white split petal form.

Ipomoea nil Q0338

I think this strain will be a total joy, look at this fabulous leaf! It is also a slow grower in its early stage of life, which is ideal if you wish to grow it indoors as a house plant.

Nikon D70 Micro-NIKKOR 3.5/55mm Ipomoea nil Q0338

Ipomoea nil Q0745

This asagao strain will be a fun one to grow. It is showing signs of being a true dwarf-type morning glory with the short internode distance it is showing at the present time.

Nikon D70 Micro-NIKKOR 3.5/55mm Ipomoea nil Q0745

Ipomoea nil Q0777

I am a lover of asagao leaves and I see this plant, although slow growing, appears it will make the extremely variegated leaves I see in the reference photo on the Kyushu University morning glory web site.

Nikon D70 Micro-NIKKOR 3.5/55mm Ipomoea nil Q0777

Ipomoea nil Q0784

This species should have wonderfully variegated leaves,a trait that can be seen in the more recent leaves such as this one. This plant is showing slow growth, perhaps it will be a good candidate for an indoors-grown house plant.

Ipomoea purpurea Q1181 leaf

I admire the beautiful yellow-leaf trait in this unusual strain of Ipomoea purpurea. The leaf has become the more usual cordate shape, different from the initial leaves which were more elongated.

Ipomoea nil leaf - Fujie's Purple Reverse Tube Morning Glory

Here is a view of a lovely variegated leaf on this young plant. Its leaf shows the qualities consistent with the "crepe-reversed" genetic mutation in which the surface of the leaf shows a rough texture, not unlike that seen in a bamboo leaf; this trait is associated with flowers that will make reverse tube form (also known as "cup flower" form). See here for more information: www.shigen.nig.ac.jp/asagao/ViewGeneDetail.do?id=17

Japanese Morning Glories II - From Seedling to Flowering

I am enjoying reading this excellent book about Japanese Morning Glory, titled "Japanese Morning Glories II - From Seedling to Flowering", published in 2000 by the National Museum of Japanese History (NMJH) [ISBN 4-916202-31-7]. It is a nearly 80 page compilation of information presented in an exhibition held at the museum August 1 - September 3, 2000. A brief description of the exhibition may be found on this web site: www.rekihaku.ac.jp/english/exhibitions/project/o000801_02...

There are three main chapters, which are as follows:
Chapter I (Written by Eiji Nitasaka, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science, Kyushu University)
--From Seedling to Flowering of Major Strains
--What are Mutant Japanese Morning Glories?
--Masaki-type Strains
--The Seedless Demono-type Strains
--Demono-type Strains

Chapter II (Written by Reiji Iwabuchi, History Department, NMJH)
--Cultivation Methods in the Edo Period

Chapter III (Written by Hiromi Kobayashi, Horticultural Researcher, Chiba Prefectural Boso-no-mura Museum, Jukichirou Watanabe,History Department, NMJH, and Yoshihide Kitai, Horticultural Researcher, NMJH)
--Cultivation Methods

This book was presented to me as a gift. I presume it is available in Japan at the museum.

I installed this rare strain of Ipomoea purpurea in its final growing pot yesterday. I use supplemental light from an ordinary fluorescent bulb set on a timer to provide 8 hours of light.

It already has flower buds!

Rapeseed Cake Fertilizer for my indoors-grown asagao

This is food for my indoors-grown asagao. I learned to use this type of fertilizer to feed my plants from reading how Japanese morning glory growers feed their plants. Unfortunately, it attracts raccoons, as I learned the hard way. The raccoon dug up every one of my pots that year. So now I use it to feed my indoors-grown houseplants. Rapeseed Cake Fertilizer

I am excited to see what appears to be yellow leaf-type leaves developing on this young plant. Ipomoea nil Fujie's Starburst

Ipomoea nil Q0338

This strain's leaves eventually should be fabulously variegated. Look at the cotyledons to see this prediction! Ipomoea nil Q0338

Ipomoea nil Q0745

Look at the delicious variegated pattern in this asagao strain's cotyledons. I admire the crystal patch (the pure white patch on the edge). Ipomoea nil Q0745

Ipomoea nil Q0777

I am excited to see this first true leaf develop, since there was only one cotyledon. It appears this seedling will survive now. Ipomoea nil Q0777

Ipomoea nil Q0784

The first true leaf shows a nice cordate shape. The cotyledons indicate the leaves should eventually become variegated. Nikon D70 Micro-NIKKOR 3.5/55mm Ipomoea nil Q0784
