Heian no Izume

Heian no Izume, originally uploaded by Gerris2.

I loved the extremely large lavender flowers of Heian no Izume. It glowed in the early morning light. The flower texture was resinous in quality, color flowing into the tube.

Hatsushimo (First Frost)

I have a strong affection for speckled flowers and with this image you can see why! Alas, these speckled forms are not big seed makers, I only was rewarded with one viable-looking seed in spite of many flowers on this plant. I will grow this one out again to see if I can increase my seed numbers to 2 or more.

Japanese Morning Glory Blue Blizzard variant

A variant of the earlier blizzard flower pattern, this flower was a deep blue color, velvet-like in quality and just a hint of white on the limb edge. The red color in the tube area is also attractive.

My asagao vines in my office at work are now flowering nicely. This one is making blue blizzard flowers with subsequent variations. It has variegated leaves as well.

Q1044 First Flower

Q1044 flower 2, originally uploaded by Gerris2.

Here is the Kyushu University strain Q1044, showing the first flower on this indoors-grown plant. The parent plant may have been pollinated by bees which could have resulted in this nice flower that does not match the reference flower on the KU asagao web site. In addition to the blizzard-like effect flowers, the leaves are heart shaped and yellow green color.

Q1280 Red Speckled Heaven

Q1280 flower red speckled 3, originally uploaded by Gerris2.

Here is another beautiful asagao from Japan, compliments of the seed dispersal program of Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. I began growing this vine in early winter, and it slowly made a vine on the small wire circular trellis I offered it. I enjoyed seeing its variegated leaves through the winter months, and just yesterday I was rewarded with a series of quite nice red speckled flowers. The flower on this indoors-winter-grown vine is nearly 4 inches in diameter. Each flower is different in its speckling patterns and I will photograph each one and post it here in the blog. Enjoy.
